Stephen Tall: A Strong Voice for Headington

'Still Human, Still Here' sleep-out in Oxford this Wednesday

6.17.00pm GMT Sun 2nd Mar 2008

An email reaches me advertising a sleep-out to create awareness of how failed asylum seekers are forced to live

destitute on the streets. It takes place this Wednesday, 5th March, and is being organised by STAR (Student Action for

Refugees), Amnesty International and Asylum Welcome. It is one of a number of sleep-outs taking place around the country that night, as part of Amnesty International's 'Still Human, Still Here' campaign. Further details below:

***

Our sleep-out in Oxford will be held within the grounds of the Church of St Mary Magdalen and supported by Dr. Revd Peter Groves. We will be campaigning along Cornmarket during the early evening and a local theatre group will be performing a monologue on the street of one person's experience of seeking asylum in the UK.

We are inviting partner and supporting organisations and people to join us in our campaigning actions and to show their support to the cause by sleeping out with us through the night in an act of solidarity.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us for the sleep-out. Activities in Cornmarket will start at 5pm on Wednesday 5th March and continue through the night. We would be very pleased if you could join us for this event and show your support to the cause.

The Rt. Hon. Evan Harris and Oxford Lord Mayor, John Tanner have all confirmed their attendance.
