David Rundle: "radical change" ahead for Oxford's leisure centres

Wed 6th Feb 2008

My Headington ward colleague, Cllr David Rundle, has two unenviable tasks: being the City Council's deputy leader, and responsible for Oxford's leisure centres. He's written to The Oxford Times to address how the Lib Dems are dealing with the terrible legacy of two decades of Labour neglect of our leisure centres:

Lib Dems reveal Council Tax has doubled since Labour came to power in '97

Sun 3rd Feb 2008

We all know what in iniquitous tax the Council Tax is. Introduced by the Tories, it has been kept by Labour - and the cost has doubled in the last decade under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. The average council tax per dwelling in England and Wales has increased by 96% since 1997/8, from £554 to over £1000 in 2007/08. The Liberal Democrats would, as I'm sure you know, scrap council tax and replace it with a fairer tax based on the ability to pay.

This Wednesday, 6th February, sees the very first meeting of the Headington North Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG). The Headington North NAG forms part of the Neighbourhood Policing programme that will be fully operational nationally by April 2008.

Combating racism - how Oxford City does it

Fri 25th Jan 2008

A resident recently asked what exactly Oxford City Council does to tackle racism in our community. It was one of those questions which, slightly embarrassingly, stumped me: I know the Council has always taken a firm anti-racist line - and that councillors have made it a priority for the Council to enact anti-discrimination legislation - but that's a bit different from working out how you can change hearts and minds in the city at large. I asked one of the Council managers to brief me, and thought I'd share her bullet points with you...

Thu 24th Jan 2008

Don't forget Headington's farmers' market this Friday!

Wed 23rd Jan 2008

If it's the fourth Friday of the month that can mean only one thing: Headington farmer's market on Kennett Road, simply the best place to stock up on fresh meat, vegetables and other delicacies. Chares Young the market's organiser, brings us this month's highlights:

Clegg: time for radical grassroots innovation in public services

Sat 12th Jan 2008

New Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has hit 2008 running, delivering a major speech setting the tone for the party's approach to public services under his leadership - in short, making sure they are driven by local people's needs, not by bureaucrats in Whitehall. Here are some extracts from his speech, below:

Vince Cable's amazingly effective turn as acting Lib Dem leader comes to an end tomorrow when the new leader of the party is revealed following an all-member ballot. 33 Perrin Street: planning appeal dismissed

Sat 15th Dec 2007

Most planning applications are not decided by city councillors; they are 'delegated' to the City Council's planning officers. Usually these are quite straightforward, and councillors get to hear about those which are controversial. One such was 33 Perrin Street, where a planning application was put in for the subdivision of the garden, and erection of a detached 2-storey 2-bed house, with access from New High Street.

10 & 12 Stephen Road planning application goes to appeal

Fri 14th Dec 2007

Residents of Stephen Road, Headington, will wish to know that an appeal has been lodged against the City Council's refusal of planning permission for the demolition of 10 & 12 Stephen Road and the erection of 5 3-bed terraced houses, and 2 1-bed flats.

Labour's bad news for Oxford's council taxpayers

Fri 7th Dec 2007

One of the common myths about Council Tax is that it pays for the local services councils provide. In fact, Council Tax makes up a relatively small proportion of council spending: roughly half of the City Council's money comes in the form of a 'revenue support grant' from central government, while a further quarter comes from business rates. This means councils are highly dependent on what money they're given by central government.

Thu 6th Dec 2007

Well, thank goodness for an outbreak of common sense: Oxfordshire NHS Trust has decided, after all, NOT to pursue its planning appeals against the City Council relating to building on the Warneford Meadow, the Warneford playing fields, and the Park Hospital site.

For instance, I find it a massive help to receive a weekly text message from the City Council telling me whether it's a green or blue box recycling week. Full details below.

Oxford Lib Dems rule out 'pay as you throw' rubbish charges

Tue 20th Nov 2007

The Lib Dem-run city council has categorically ruled out introducing New Labour proposals which allow town halls to pilot schemes where householders would pay a penalty for binning too much rubbish and be rewarded for throwing out less.

Vince Cable: Gordon Brown should come clean on Northern Rock

Tue 20th Nov 2007

How fortunate the Lib Dems are to have Vince Cable not only as our shadow chancellor, but also as our acting leader - few can speak more authoritatively than he can on economic affairs, and the Labour Government's current Treasury woes. Here's the email Vince has just sent me as a party member setting out how the Lib dems are responding to the current financial crises:

Warneford planning applications - a way forward?

Sat 17th Nov 2007

Might there be a possible breakthrough in the long-running saga of the Warneford Hospital planning applications? That's the strong hint from Julie Waldron, chief executive of the local NHS Trust in a letter to local residents association chairs.
